Newly refurbished, this is Liverpool city centre’s oldest building, the UK’s oldest arts centre and a community of creative businesses with an unmissable contemporary arts programme: visual arts, spoken word, music, dance and live art. MADE UP at the Bluecoat explores imagined futures; individual and collective, utopian and dystopian.
In the context of the Bluecoat's major redevelopment, MADE UP provided a setting for artists who imagine what might be, and who through fantasy or reinvention of reality, suggest conditions required to fulfil private or perceived communal needs. A range of responses have been elicited from this position - artists playfully interrogating their own motivations or institutional practices, alongside those taking a mischievous leap into the unknown.
