FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) is the UK’s leading organisation for the commissioning and presentation of film, video and new media art forms. For MADE UP, FACT  focuses on the power of the mind to make up meaning; art that suspends disbelief.

The difference between boredom and pleasure or pure recreation is never better demonstrated than in watching children play. With toys, words, shapes, fluff and stuff.  Pattern recognition, making things up and investigating the relationships of different materials are qualities artists share with children, accessing inner worlds, noticing relationships and remaining lucid.  These are all aspects of the profession of the artist.

The artists selected to show in MADE UP at FACT demonstrate this though a range of works, which extend between experiments in extreme minimalism, the non-representational and storytelling, all exquisitely beautiful in their different ways. Within this range the artworks invite the audience into a space that is both physical and reflective: not to view pictorial ‘representations’ of something, or document another time or place, but inviting us in to the here and now.

Many of the works have a strong physical presence, both in situ and how they affect our bodies. I urge you to find your own meaning in the mundane and make up significance through intense observation and study. Pleasure can be found in repetition, making stories out of little information. The unfolding stories throughout FACT invite the viewer to get involved and become the storyteller.
