The Liverpool School of Art and Design has 4 MPhil/PhD studentships in collaboration with some of the city’s most significant arts organisations: Liverpool Biennial (www.biennial.com) , Tate Liverpool (www.tate.org/liverpool), FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology: www.fact.co.uk/), and The Bluecoat (www.thebluecoat.org.uk), providing an opportunity to undertake doctoral research in an applied and practical environment. Allocated to a Director of Studies you will be co-supervised by other academics from the school and relevant staff from each partner organisation. Based between the Art and Design Academy, the school’s new purpose-built home, and the relevant partner organisation, these studentships represent a significant opportunity to develop substantial academic research allied to hands-on professional experience within the thriving sector of museums and galleries of contemporary art in Liverpool.

Applications are encouraged with a focus in the following areas: Liverpool Biennial – Public Art, Urbanism, the Archive; FACT – Technology, Design, Soft Architecture;  Tate Liverpool – Art History, and the impact of politics on artists' practice; The Bluecoat – Archival and Social History, definitions of practice. Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates (at least a 2:1 in a relevant degree or a Masters degree). Maintenance grant of £13,290 plus UK/EU tuition fees to support three to four years’ full-time research, subject to satisfactory progress. There will also be a requirement to undertake a small amount of teaching on relevant academic programmes. Application is by letter and curriculum vitae, including the names of two referees.
